The
mission of the Family Ministry Committee at Christ Lutheran Church is to
provide
resources, support,
and education to
help people of all ages in the church and community to experience daily a
sense of hope and belonging through the power and wisdom of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ, ultimately reflecting his teachings in our everyday
lives.
Who is a Family?
The Family Ministry
Committee wants to serve families in our church and community. There
are many types of families: married couples without children, single parents
and their children, grandparents, married parents and their children, single
adults, or combinations of these. This
means that you are
a member of a family, and the Family Ministry committee wants to serve you. This
brochure describes some of the resources, support, and educational
opportunities provided by the Family Ministry Committee.
Our Goals
The Family Ministry
Committee seeks to:
- establish
resources for the church
and
community,
- encourage
families to spend quality
time
within families and with other
families,
and
- promote
a family-friendly
atmosphere
within the church.

Resources
We maintain a
computer catalogued family resource center that includes over 400 books, videos,
magazines, brochures, and audio tapes covering many topics (see a list of topic
areas below). The library is located in the front right corner of the
fellowship hall downstairs.
We also maintain a list and informational files on Christian
organizations that provide services for families in need. This list and many
other helpful organizations can be found in “The Shepherd’s Guide.” Copies are
available in the resource center and narthex.
We have
a Congregational Resource Brochure, so members and friends can find services and
help within the congregation, from auto mechanics and babysitting to gardening
and web design.
We also have a
list of congregation members who can support others in times of need. Contact
our Pastor, DCE, or a committee member for contact information for people who
have been through parenting twins, depression, alcoholism, death of a parent,
death of a spouse, or cancer treatment.
Each month a
committee member is “on call” to assist families in finding appropriate
resources and services. This person can also simply pray with or for someone in
need. His or her phone number is printed in the monthly newsletter.
The committee also
maintains Devotional Suitcases, which help bring God home. They contain
devotional books, tapes, videos, some treats, and more to help families spend
time with God together in their home. These are available in the resource
center or from a committee member.

Support
We
organize several family
events each
year. Past events have included bowling, progressive dinners, Christian
concerts, Father’s Day picnics, hayride and bonfires, museum trips, game nights,
amusement park trips, tennis and ice cream social, trips to sporting events,
Christmas caroling, New Year’s Eve parties and more. Look
in the latest newsletter to see what is happening this month.
We are working to make
our worship service more friendly for children by providing and maintaining
children’s worship bags with small quiet toys and activities, booster seats for
young children, and resources to help parents guide their children to get more
out of our worship services.
We organize service days
to allow families to work together in service to others. For
example, doing home improvements for widows. We
have also organized a trip for adults to help with hurricane relief.
We also organize events
to meet the needs of different groups in our congregation, such as Women’s
Overnights, Marriage Seminars, family weekend retreats, a dinner for parents of
young children, Couple’s Night Out, and more.
We have also implemented
programs to help our church become a friendlier place, such as church name tags
and church T-shirts.

Education
Our
education offerings typically take place in a seminar format. We
typically coordinate and provide refreshments for 3 Sunday intergenerational
seminars each year (see the Bible Studies page for more information on these).
We
have also offered afternoon and evening seminars on such topics as Caring for
Your Aging Parents, Time Management, Parenting (“Bringing Up Boys”), Marriage
Enrichment, Dealing with Family Members Who Don’t Attend Church, and more.
Every
Spring, we offer “Celebrate
Sexuality,”
which is a five week Christian sex education class for fifth graders and their
parents. Most of the material is
taken from Concordia Publishing House’s “Learning about Sex” series, especially
Sex and the New You for ages 11-14. Each
session involves games, presentations, family discussion time. Our
main objectives for “Celebrate Sexuality” are to educate our children about
their developing sexuality and many of the issues they face surrounding their
sexuality, especially before they hear it from a secular perspective in school
(without moral instruction) and to initiate an open atmosphere and conversation
between children and parents about sexuality. Contact our DCE to find out when
the next class will be offered.
